When we’re not busy choosing exclusive bottles for our French wine subscription club, we love finding San Diego’s best spots to drink French wines. Here’s our favourite places in and around the city for a romantic date night, a catch up with friends or simply to order French wine online from the comfort of your sofa!

  1. Bleu Boheme

Topping our list is local favorite Bleu Boheme has been rated as the city’s Best French Restaurant by the San Diego Magazine every year since 2010. Sporting a welcoming, unpretentious vibe, this bohemian spot serves up regional dishes from all over France and boasts over 100 wines available by the bottle.

The inviting atmosphere also extends to the wine list which is arranged by grape variety and region, making it easy for everybody to find a style of French wine that they will like. Particularly strong are their red Burgundy and white Bordeaux selections which are available at very agreeable prices. Bleu Boheme’s dinner menu changes weekly according to what is in season, so there’s a great excuse for visiting as often as possible!

  1. Truly Fine Wine

If you’d rather pick up some bottles to enjoy at home, check out this independent wine store which specialises in German wines as well as a short list of excellent French bottles. Noticing the lack of quality German wines available locally, owners Damon Goldstein & Sabrina Bochen started the company back in 2005 and have recently added a selection of Mexican wines from the Valle de Guadalupe as well as other international offerings to their portfolio.

  1. Café Chloe

Reminiscent of a picture-perfect Parisian bistro, Café Chloe is one of the most charming spots in East Village to enjoy classic French cuisine accompanied by excellent wines. The restaurant is celebrating it’s 14th anniversary this year and the owners have just introduced a brand new menu and refreshed interior design. Menu highlights include duck l’orange, garlicky snails or escargots, and the cafe’s signature steak frites.

The wine list is helpfully divided into reds or whites that are available by the half-glass, glass or bottle, and premium “Reserve” reds and whites available by the bottle only. Options range from fresh Sancerre and minerally Meursault from Burgundy for the whites and sophisticated reds from Chateauneuf-Du-Pape and Bordeaux. The best days to head down there are Tuesday and Wednesday when their Reserve bottles are all half-price!

  1. Kogod Wine Merchant

One of our personal favorites when it comes to buying French wines online is Kogod Wine Merchant which operates out of Encinitas just to the north of San Diego. Founder Mark Kogod really knows his stuff and is our go-to guy for exclusive top Burgundies! His online store makes it really easy to pick out that special bottle and get it shipped direct to your door.

  1. Et Voilà!

The name of this cute little place is a dead giveaway to all the French gastronomic goodness that you’ll find inside. French chef Vincent Viale originally hails from Provence and learnt his trade at culinary school in Thonon-Les-Bains on the shore of Lake Geneva before moving to the US.

A fun feature of this place is the option to do a wine flight of 4 2oz glasses. Simply choose from  4 reds, 4 whites, or a mixture of 2 reds and 2 white wines and the resident sommelier will match your preferences with their ample wine list.

  1. The Winery Restaurant

Recently opened close to the Westfield UTC mall is this charming new spot from partners JC Clow, William Lewis and French Chef Yvon Goetz who opened their first The Winery Restaurant in San Diego over a decade ago. Their new venture offers both a restaurant which features Goetz’s classic cooking and a cosy wine bar area which is perfect for date night.

The real star here, though, is the wine. By the glass you can choose from over thirty wines from all over the world, while their bottle list changes weekly to make sure you always have something new to try. Particular strengths include their selections from Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhone Valley.
