Region: Graves AOC, Bordeaux

Tasting Notes: Nose of blackcurrant and sweet chocolate. Strong and fruity body, balanced by freshness and silky tannin.

Blend: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot.

Hold Time: Now or up to 10 years

Alcohol: 13.5%

Pair With: This full-flavored wine is excellent with red meat, game, duck or lamb: try the mythical 7-hour roast leg of lamb with luscious potatoes. This wine will even stand spicy or very tasty dishes. Bordeaux wines traditionally accompany the local porcini mushrooms, so a mushroom omelet or quiche is a good choice. For a simpler and quicker meal, try an assortment of cheeses and charcuteries, or a good old cheeseburger.

Description

The splendid Château de Portets, a historical monument, stands 25km south of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne river, with direct access to the water. Around the Château are beautiful gardens, ancient trees and 50 acres of vineyards that produce 3 wines, 2 red and a white wine.

It is open to visitors and you can enjoy a tour of the wineries and cellars, learn all about winemaking, and taste the three wines with local food. This new tourist-friendly approach was initiated by the new owner and manager: Marie-Helene Yung Theron. She also made great improvements in the wineries and guest areas. She took over after her father, and her grandfather who bought the domain in 1956.

The grapes are macerated for 30 days in concrete tanks, and fermentation lasts about 5 days. Maturing in oak barrels lasts 13 months, to get a grand and elegant wine!
