Description

Chateauneuf du Pape is a historic village between Avignon and Orange, in the southern Rhone Valley. Avignon was the residence of several Popes during the 14th century to escape the turmoil of Rome. It became then one of the largest and certainly most cosmopolitan cities in Europe! This wine is produced by a group called “vignerons de caractère” founded in 1957. It is composed of 80 families of wine makers on 800 hectares. What makes this wine unique in structure and flavor comes from the nature of the soil, the dry climate and the blend of three grape varietals: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, commonly known as GSM. The yield is very low, giving a strong full-bodied wine. Grenache gives a jammy red fruit flavor,
Syrah brings spices and black fruit and Mourvedre offers a hint of bitter chocolate. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 10 to 18 months, and can be kept for 7 to 10 years.
