Coteaux Bourguignons, Burgundy, 2017
A wonderful red Burgundy made from 100% Gamay grapes.
While red Burgundy has a fabulous reputation all over the world, the appellation of Coteaux Bourguignons is still something of a hidden gem. Red Burgundy is always made using the Pinot Noir grape, the fun thing about Coteaux Bourguignons is that they can be made with Pinot Noir, Gamay, and two lesser-known local grape varieties called Tressot and Cesar.
This flexibility gives winemakers more freedom to create a unique bottle of wine which combines the noble spirit and terroir of Burgundy with the light-hearted, refreshing character of the Gamay grape.
This delicious Coteaux Bourguignons is made by Les Vignerons de Mancey which was founded in 1929 and sits in prime Burgundy territory close to the southerly town of Macon. The winery has over 80 winemaker members who come together to produce top quality wines that reflect the local terroir.
In the case of this particular wine, the vignerons or winemakers of Mancey decided to showcase the indigenous Gamay. It is mostly Gamay with some Pinot noir to add structure and depth.
This incredible French red wine from Burgundy is stemmed before being slightly pressed, kept in stainless steel tanks, and bottled the next Spring. Completely unoaked, It does not need aging.
Looking to pair this wine with food? We recommend ham and charcuterie, and can be a lovely picnic wine, to be served cool. The wine also pairs well with pasta dishes and Quiche.
