The Wine story

The Frey family came from Switzerland in the 18th century and bought a farm in Dambach la Ville. They only had a small vineyard and grew other things.

In 1963, Charles and his father decided to devote all their land to vineyards. In 1997, his son Dominique, with wife Nathalie and their two boys, decided to turn to organic farming.

This cuvée is called GRANIT for its special terroir. The soil is a mixture of coarse sand and granite, well suited for the Riesling variety. The vine roots are strong enough to break the granite and go deep into the ground, which is well drained. After picking, the whole grapes are slightly pressed and the juice or « mout » is fermented with native yeasts. Then the wine matures on fine lees in big wooden vats for 8 months.

Favorite Pairing

Perfect with Alsatian cuisine…sauerkraut, smoked or salted pork, sausages and hams. Of course, with the strong local cheese: Munster.

You can also pair it with oysters, fish, smoked salmon on creamed blinis and shrimps.

The Region

The Rhine River separates France from Germany and vineyards grow on both sides of the Valley. In France they form a line of well exposed slopes, about 100 km long between Strasbourg and Mulhouse, and only 15 km wide.

The 4200 domains of the region have a great variety of terroirs adapted to different grapes, vinified separately. So, Alsace produces different kinds of wines, sweet, dry, spicy, even sparkling, the Crémant d’Alsace.
