Pierre Sourdais 2018 – Le Moulin a Tan – Chinon Red
Pierre Sourdais is the son of a family of vignerons in Chinon. He states that “Even when inherited, vines only give to those who care for it lovingly”. Sourdais began managing this 50 acre domain in 1981. The name of his property, “Moulin à Tan” comes from an ancient mill in the area that is used to crush oak bark.
This wine is a single varietal, however it comes from different soils. The gravelly banks of the Vienne river lend to a light and fruity wine. The hillsides and plateaux made of clay and limestone, with some flintstone on the top delivers to a stronger full-bodied wine. The art of the winemaker is to balance these different cuvées.
Manual picking occurs at optimum maturity, and the grapes are then destemmed and fermented in vats for three weeks. Only some of the wine is aged in barrels. The choice is determined by multiple tastings and analysis.
