The wine story

Rhonea is a group of 388 artisan winegrowers in the lower Rhone Valley who decided to pool their marketing and sales services while remaining strongly attached to their family estates. Their skills have been passed down through generations.

Roque Colombe is one of the domains of the Bréchet family who have made wine for five generations. Their ancestor Auguste Bréchet, won a gold medal in Paris in 1900 with only a small vineyard in Gigondas. Now each of the five members of the family have their own domain.

Grapes are handpicked early in the morning and quickly taken to the winery in small crates to keep them as fresh as possible. They are pressed immediately and then left to settle for a few days. The juice is fermented at a low temperature for ten days. Only part of the wine is kept in oak barrels for six to eight months before blending and bottling.

The Region

The village of Chateauneuf du Pape is close to Avignon. As they did not feel safe in Rome, it became the residence of several Popes in the 14th century. With the Popes came cardinals, monks and members of clergy who wanted to drink wine, and not only at mass! It then became a wine growing region. The terroir is sand and pebbles, the climate hot and dry – which yields ripe and concentrated grapes.
