Description
The wine story
Since 1960, Cave Saint Desirat has been operating in the region. It is a group of 350 winegrowers who own 600 ha in several appellations, producing fine wines like Saint Joseph, Condrieu, Côtes du Rhone and vin de pays de L’Ardèche.
The vineyards are on very steep slopes, and terraced with small drystone walls, which makes all the work in the vineyards very difficult. Every step must be done by hand as machines can’t reach the vineyards.
The undersoil is granite, and the topsoil is not deep. The production is small…only 40 hl per ha.
After manual picking, the grapes are destemmed, the maceration lasts 3 weeks to extract maximum flavor, then a slow controlled fermentation.

The Region
This wine is made on the right bank of the Rhone river. There are vineyards all along between Vienne and Avignon. This appellation is in the Northern part, so the climate is a bit colder in winter, especially when the strong mistral wind blows down the Rhone valley. Yet some of the best wines are produced here, besides Saint Joseph, such as Croze Hermitage and Cornas.
