When you’re looking for the perfect gift for soon-to-be parents, wine seems like a great choice. Unlike yet more cute baby outfits, diapers or novelty stuffed toys, wine is always a welcome gift for exhausted parents getting used to a whole new way of life! But how do you know which wine to choose, especially if you don’t know the future parents that well? Here’s our comprehensive guide to choosing the very best wine gift for a baby shower that the parents (and kids!) are sure to love.
Give A Mixed Case
If you’re not sure which type of wine the soon-to-be parents enjoy drinking, one easy option is to give a mixed case with a few different wines. Here at somMailier we offer three and six-bottle selections of delicious French wines which can be delivered direct to your chosen recipient’s door. We choose the wines for you – all you need to do is decide whether to send all reds, all whites, or a mix of the two. This is a great gesture especially for busy new parents getting used to the childcare routine!
All of our wine gift boxes also come with detailed and educational cards for each wine, giving tasting notes on the wine, telling the story of the winery, and helping you to understand why the wine tastes the way it does. This makes your baby shower gift a really interactive and special experience as your recipients can look forward to conducting their own tasting sessions and trying out the suggested food pairings for each bottle.
Give A Wine Subscription
Another great option to consider is giving a wine club gift subscription to the parents-to-be. Every quarter we send our wine club members a delicious selection of 3 or 6 bottles direct to their door from boutique family-run wineries which have been exclusively imported to the U.S.A. by somMailier.
somMailier wine club was founded by Laurent Yung who comes from a long line of Bordeaux winemakers. Together with his brother, Patrick, who has a wine distribution business in Paris, Laurent regularly travels to France to source exceptional wines from small producers that have not yet been discovered in the United States. This means you can rest assured your recipients will receive a truly unique gift they couldn’t find anywhere else!
The best thing about our wine club is how flexible and customisable the experience is. You can select all reds, all whites or a mix of the two, depending on your recipient’s preferences, and you can easily choose exactly how long you want your gift to run for. You can choose a 6-month (2 deliveries), one-year (4 deliveries) or even two-year (8 deliveries) subscription to keep the future parents’ wine cellar stocked up while they’re running around after their little one!
In case you still need convincing, here’s a couple of testimonials from some of our many satisfied customers:
“A unique gift that keeps on giving
We received our first shipment in December as part of a gift for my wife. We both loved the wines and look forward to receiving our second shipment. It has been a great way to learn about French wines!”
“What an amazing gift to receive!
Just received a lovely assortment of French wine. The cards are a thoughtful and helpful addition. Details provided on each wine, suggested pairings, as well as information about the region, will only enhance our drinking pleasure!”
Giving a wine subscription is far more than just a one-off gift since each wine shipment takes you on a journey through France’s diverse wine regions from the comfort of your sofa. It helps wine novices and enthusiasts alike to hone their palate, learn more about French culture and discover new favorite bottles. Members are able to re-order any wines they particularly enjoyed at a 15% discount on the regular price – a feature that our wine club members really love!
The Yung family is packed with talented winemakers, so there’s also the opportunity to visit Laurent’s family’s wineries should our wine club members ever find themselves in France. One great example is Chateau de Portets in Graves in the Bordeaux wine region owned by Laurent’s cousin, Marie-Hélène Yung-Théron. Marie-Hélène makes one of our wine club’s favorite Bordeaux red, the Château de Portets Grand Vin which is an ideal addition to any cellar or partner for hearty red meat dishes.
Something For The Cellar
A baby shower gift doesn’t have to be just for the parents. Over in France it’s a common tradition to give a case of ageworthy wines which will continue maturing until the child is old enough to enjoy them. You could consider embracing this custom and purchasing a quality bottle of wine which can be kept until the kid is old enough to enjoy it as well.
This is a really thoughtful gift since it gives the whole family something to look forward to when the child reaches a milestone birthday and becomes an adult. It also ensures that they’ll be thinking of you in years to come, making this a great option for close family members or even for gifts for valued employees or colleagues. Don’t forget to include a personal note explaining that the bottle is meant to be kept and enjoyed when the child is old enough!
If you go down this route you need to be looking for a bottle which can easily withstand a couple of decades of ageing, assuming that it will most likely be opened when the child turns 18 or 21. Red wines usually age much better than whites, so great choices include hearty reds from Bordeaux or Syrah-based wines from France’s Rhone Valley.
One magnificent and ageworthy choice which has proved really popular with our somMailier wine club members is the Denis Lurton Margaux 2016. The Lurton family are a true Bordeaux dynasty with three generations and at least 15 Lurtons working some 30 vineyards all over the world. Denis Lurton initially pursued a career as a lawyer but later followed in his family’s footsteps and took over the running of Château Desmirail in Bordeaux.
Château Desmirail’s previous owners had included famous composer Félix Mendelssohn’s nephew, a glove maker from northern France and the owners of the legendary Château Palmer. Since taking the reins of Château Desmirail, Denis has overseen substantial improvements in the quality of the estate’s wines while staying true to its long winemaking heritage. His masterful namesake Margaux is truly one of Bordeaux’s hidden gems with a firm structure and well-developed tannins which will respond well to extended ageing.
