With Father’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the perfect gift. One Father’s Day gift that’s sure to impress is a bottle or two of delicious French wine. Ideal for Dads who love wine and enjoy the finer things in life, French wine makes a very special gift indeed thanks to its classic and sophisticated image. Whether your Dad is a wine aficionado or he just likes to savor the odd glass or two, French wine makes a memorable and thoughtful gift to show him just how much you care.

Artisanal Family-Run Wineries

When you gift wine from somMailier, you can be sure each and every bottle is sourced from passionate small-scale producers in France. Most of our partner wineries are family-run, and several are even run by members of our founder Laurent’s family! Laurent comes from a long line of Bordeaux winemakers, and several make their very own wines like his cousin Marie Helene Yung-Theron who owns Chateau de Portets in the Bordeaux sub-region of Graves. Laurent works closely with his brother, Patrick, who owns and operates one of the oldest wine distribution businesses in Paris to uncover brilliant family-run and small producers from all over France.

Gastronomic Perfection

If your Dad loves cooking (or just eating good food!), French wines are the perfect choice to pair with a whole variety of foods. The French have been pairing their wines with food for centuries, and many experts agree that French cuisine and wines have developed alongside each other, with winemakers and chefs honing their creations to complement each other beautifully.

Sending your Dad a box or a subscription of delicious French wines is the ideal excuse for Dad (and Mom!) to experiment in the kitchen with some classic French dishes like coq au vin, beef bourguignon, or onion soup. If Dad’s not a keen cook, why not drop off a selection of French cheeses or charcuterie for a delicious but simple meal with real Gallic flair!

A Taste Of French Culture

Another benefit of giving French wine is the opportunity to appreciate and learn about another culture. France has been making wine for thousands of years, and wine is an important part of daily life for many French people. Enjoying some delicious French wines is a great way to taste a bit of French culture without the need to even leave your comfortable sofa. Giving French wine is also a great way to bring back Dad’s memories of trips to Europe or to inspire future travel plans to explore some of France’s great wine regions!

Try Something New

A wine club subscription makes the perfect Father’s Day gift for adventurous types since each box is packed with new wines that you can be certain Dad hasn’t tried before. Most of our wines are exclusively imported to the United States by SomMailier so you won’t find them available anywhere else. This means you can give a truly unique gift and introduce Dad to something completely new.

Each gift subscription comes with the option to choose between all reds, all whites or a mixture of the two, so you can tailor the wines to your Dad’s preferences. Each quarter Laurent and his brother Patrick select a diverse assortment of wines ranging from rich, full bodied reds and creamy whites to elegant Pinot Noir from Burgundy or crisp dry Riesling from France’s eastern Alsace region.

This variety helps introduce your recipient to new wine styles as well as lesser-known French wine regions that they might not have heard of before. Each box is equipped with detailed wine information cards for each bottle so Dad can find out more about his new favorites and discover the stories behind every wine.

Learn A New Skill

Gifting a wine club subscription is also an amazing way to help Dad learn a new skill – wine tasting! Whether your Dad already knows his Burgundy from his Bordeaux or if he’s just dipping his toes into the world of wine, receiving a regular box of delicious French wine will quickly help him hone his palate and fine tune those wine tasting skills.

Experts agree that the best way to learn about wine is to taste as much as possible, and every quarterly wine shipment is packed with information to help your recipient discover the distinctive flavor profile of each wine. The wine information cards include detailed tasting notes and describe how the wine is made.

The best way to learn to taste wine is to start with the aromas, giving the wine a good swirl in the glass so you can better detect the aroma compounds. Then take a deep sniff and spend a moment thinking about what aromas you can smell. Repeat the steps with the tasting, taking time to swirl the wine around in your mouth like mouthwash. The final step is simple – take a look at the wine information card and see how many you got right!

One fun suggestion for getting the most out of your (or your Dad’s!) wine box is to host a wine tasting evening with friends and family. Guests taste several different wines and have to write down their own tasting notes for each bottle. The one whose notes are closest to the information cards is the winner!

Still need convincing? Here’s what some of our club members have to say about SomMailier wine club:

“My wife and I love French wine, but unfortunately we have a limited knowledge of the vineyards beyond the big names. SomMailier has solved this for us by introducing us to outstanding wine from small family vineyards throughout France and providing us the story behind the wine. To have all this delivered to our doorstep brings a smile to our faces every time!”
– Dave

“I had never gifted a wine club membership before I selected somMailier for my husband, who is particularly enamored with French wines. He couldn’t be happier with the wines that have been selected and the detailed information that arrives with each bottle, including how to pair the wine with food. The communication from somMailier has been so impressive right down to the personalized email follow ups from Laurent himself to the newsletters and special offers that are regularly sent out. I know when I am corresponding with them that I am getting an actual person that cares. I would highly recommend somMailier for anyone looking for a wonderful wine club membership for themselves or as a gift!”
– Teresa

“Very happy with our experience with SomMailier. Correspondence has been excellent, as has the level of customer service – from welcome emails from the founder and CEO, to prompt replies and very quick turn around on orders. Plus the wines we have so far sampled have been superb. We like having access to quality French wines we would not otherwise be able to find in the U.S. Very happy!”
Jamie

“Our friends always love receiving this as gifts for Christmas or birthdays or whatever. We like giving them out because we get a taste too when we visit!”
– Jim

“I had an exceptional experience with this company. When I ordered a gift for my parents, I had not written a gift card and Laurent was so kind to personally email me to ask if I would like to fill out a gift card. He also was very helpful when I called later to try to track my shipment. This personal, caring service as well as great french wines is the perfect combination!! I highly recommend SomMailier!!!”
– Diana

“The wines arrived on time, with lovely packaging, and the wines were delicious. They were a fantastic gift. Highly recommended!”
